Play Therapy

What is Play Therapy?

During child therapy sessions, children play out their thoughts, feelings, experiences, and trauma. Aimed at children aged 3 to 12, this therapeutic support provides a safe space for them to process and master painful or fearful experiences. Instead of having to explain with words what troubles them, children use play to communicate their feelings. These play therapy sessions are child-led and non-directive, ensuring effective mental health support.

When to refer?

Parents, caregivers, and professionals may consider a referral for child therapy when a child’s emotions or behaviors start to interfere with daily life, relationships, or overall well-being. Because children often communicate through behavior rather than words, play therapy can be particularly effective for providing therapeutic support when emotional struggles are hard to articulate. You don’t have to wait for a crisis; early mental health support is often easier and more effective.

The Play THerapy Process

1. Invited in for a face-to-face parent meeting to discuss your child's therapy needs.

2. Professionals meeting to evaluate the best mental health support options.

3. Intro session for your child to understand the therapeutic support provided.

4. Play Therapy sessions begin, focusing on child therapy techniques.

5. Midway Review to assess progress in mental health support.

6. Play Therapy sessions continue, ensuring ongoing therapeutic support.

7. Review of the child's development and therapy effectiveness.

8. Either Play Therapy sessions will continue based on progress, or there will be a planned and structured ending.

9. A comprehensive report on your child's therapy will be written upon request.

A minimum of 15 sessions is recommended for effective child therapy.
